| New Joint EAPA – NAPA Publication |
| The European Asphalt Pavement Association (EAPA) and NAPA (the USA National Asphalt Pavement Association) and have published “The Asphalt Paving Industry: A Global Perspective”. This joint publication is intended to give the reader an overview of the world’s asphalt pavement industry. It provides a description of the industry, its scope, and its economic impact. The document includes chemical and physical data about asphalt pavement material, describes asphalt mixing plants, and explains how transport and placement of asphalt mixes is accomplished. In addition, it discusses bitumen fume exposure and measures that have been taken to reduce exposure including engineering controls and warm-mix asphalt. | 5th Eurasphalt & Eurobitume Congress 2012 in Istanbul |
| The 5th Eurasphalt and Eurobitume Congress, which is organised by EAPA and Eurobitume, will be held in Istanbul on 13th to 15th June, 2012.
The E&E Congress is recognised as a main industry event for gaining high level information as well as a principal meeting place for asphalt and bitumen professionals to network with other key road infrastructure stakeholders. It attracts participants and delegates from around the world.
In addition to offering a beautiful location, Istanbul was seen by the organisers as providing an opportunity not only to foster communication across Europe but also with its neighbours in Asia.
Previous E&E Congresses have been held in Strasbourg in 1996, Barcelona in 2000, Vienna in 2004 and in Copenhagen in 2008.

| EAPA Position Paper “Warm Mix Asphalt” available |
| Warm Mix Asphalt: A Sustainable Alternative
The EAPA Position Paper “The use of Warm Mix Asphalt” is available on the EAPA website.

The position paper outlines technologies for producing Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) at temperatures between 100 and 140°C, while still maintaining the properties and performance of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), which is produced at higher temperatures of 140 to 180°C. A typical WMA is applied at around 20-40°C lower than an equivalent HMA.
The position paper highlights the multiple environmental, manufacturing and operational benefits of WMA when compared to HMA.
• Environmental Benefits
Because of the lower production temperature of WMA, less energy is needed to heat the aggregate, which results in lower emissions and less fuel being used.
• Manufacturing and Paving Benefits
Lower asphalt temperatures result in less hardening of the bitumen/binder during manufacture. Furthermore, the WMA process will lower the amount of dust extraction because the aggregate is heated to a lower temperature.
• Paving Operations Benefits
The use of WMA improves the handling characteristics of asphalt, minimises fumes and odours for the asphalt workers and the public near work sites and creates a cooler, more comfortable working environment.
Warm Mix Asphalt is a greener, more sustainable alternative to Hot Mix Asphalt and demonstrates the European Asphalt Industry’s keenness to contribute to global carbon reduction and achieve the objectives of the Kyoto Protocol.

This first CD contains the full text of the 200 papers accepted for publication at the Congress and has search facilities for easy access and quick examination of the technical content.
On the second CD you will find photos, PowerPoint presentations, Moderators’ Reports and papers of the proceedings in pdf-files.

| New EAPA Paper “Arguments to simulate asphalt reuse and recycling” available |
| The re-use and the recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavements (RAP) started more than 30 years ago. In many European countries the use of RAP is common practice.
Asphalt is 100% re-usable / recyclable and for sustainable development its re-use / recycling should therefore be encouraged. RAP can be re-used to produce new asphalt (in plant and in-situ) and it can be recycled by using emulsions, foamed bitumen and by adding cement (in plant and in-situ). To stimulate the re-use and the recycling of RAP this document provides arguments for governments and public authorities to stimulate this process.
Each year about 50 million tons of RAP is produced and a large amount of this 50 million tons is reused and recycled. The goal should be to achieve 100%.
This document addresses the need for re-use and recycling for sustainable development by consideration of legislation, economical aspects, the supply and demand market, creating awareness of the client, technical and contractual issues as well as environmental aspects.

| New EAPA Paper “Asphalt pavements in tunnels” available |
| The use of asphalt in road tunnels is a topic which is currently discussed by many engineers in the construction industry. The background for these discussions is mostly related with safety in tunnels and the reaction to fire of asphalt. This document will describe the possibilities of the use of asphalt in tunnels. It will address the construction issues of paving asphalt in tunnels, noise reduction, skid resistance, maintenance and lightness in tunnels as well as the safety aspects with regard to paving activities and the reaction to fires in tunnels.

| Croatian Asphalt Association new EAPA member |
| In June 2007 the Croatian Asphalt Association - Hrvatsko Asfaltersko Društvo (HAD) has officially become a member of EAPA.
About 50% of the asphalt producers in Croatia are member of HAD and in total they produce more than 70% of the annual asphalt production of Croatia.
